Main research areas
The chemical synthesis of naturally occurring organic compounds occupies the minds of chemists for roughly one and a half century. Today organic synthesis continues to be necessary for several reasons. First reason is that synthesis provides the ultimate proof of structure of a new substance. A second reason for practicing synthesis is the necessity of preparing useful substances in more efficient ways and this is the most important source of innovation and invention that assures progress in the field organic chemistry. Synthesis can also be used as the source of compounds with unique properties instead using of natural objects. The field of our research is synthesis and structural modifications of low-molecular bio-regulators and their analogs.

The main goal
Directed synthesis and isolation of chemical compounds with unique properties and materials for special purposes.
We study approaches to the synthesis of natural compounds of different classes: functionally substituted 1,4-naphthoquinones, cyclopentene β,β'-triketones, higher isoprenoids, alkaloids and their structural analogues and also carry out an experimental and theoretical investigations of their properties.
As a result of our studies the production schedules of echinochrome (2,3,5,6,8-pentahydroxy-7-ethyl-1,4-naphthoquinone) synthesis were developed. Echinochrome - Scaphechinus mirabilis (sea urchin) pigment - is a substance of Histochrom medications series used in ophthalmology and cardiology. Several metabolites of higher plants (Panax ginseng, Piper coruscans, Lomandra hastilis), lichen (Cladonia cristatella, Cetraria islandica, C. cucullata), sea urchins (Scaphechinus mirabilis, Spatangus sp., Strongylocentrotus sp.), sea squirts (Cystodytes sp., Didemnum sp., Aplidium glabrum), sponges (Fascaplysinopsis sp.), fungi (Fusarium sp., Gibberella sp., Mycogone sp.) and their analogs were synthesized.
On the basis of spinochrom D dimethyl ether (2,5,8-trihydroxy-6,7-dimethoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) ethylidene-3,3'-bis(2,6,7-trihydroxynaphthazarin) - metabolite urchins Spatangus and Strongylocentrotus was synthesized, as well as its methylene and benzylidene analogues possessing antioxidant activity comparable to that of echinochrome.
